Satyagrahi Sundar Lal Bahuguna, commonly known as the father of the ‘Chipko Movement’, also fought against untouchability, The Tehri Dam project and liquor consumption and sale. He started his social activities at the mere age of thirteen by being a part of the National Independence Drive.
The ‘Chipko Andolan’ was started in the 1970s to conserve forests. This was done by hugging the trees, hence the title ‘Chipko’.
Recently, we heard about the demise of Sundar Lal Bahuguna on 21st May 2021. Throughout his life, he has taught us a lot, with the biggest learning being love and respect towards our environment.
In today’s era, our environment does not receive as much importance as it truly deserves. With all of us wanting to visit “untouched beauties” but no one working towards making it, the problem is very clear.
Taking the current situation of Covid-19, where people are having to buy oxygen or the indistinct instability in our environment, it can be concluded that we need to take action towards keeping our planet healthier, be it through simple acts of tree plantations, avoidance of littering and excess use of air conditioners and other such appliances.
We as Aksharites have also played a significant role in creating a healthy environment by constant tree plantation drives, religiously following ‘Swachh Bharat Abhayaan’ and maintaining and teaching the importance of hygiene.
We must not only practice but also spread awareness regarding the conservation of environment by following in the footsteps of Mr Sundar Lal Bahuguna to earn a better future for ourselves and the later generations.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, let us pay a tribute to our Padma Vibhushan, Sundar Lal Bahuguna, by taking an oath to learn from his ideologies and protect our Mother Nature.
Keep Safe, Keep Green!
