Music is the gift of God. Music resides in the life of every individual. Some play instruments, some sing in public and some in private and there are some, the most unique kinds like me, bathroom singers who evolve into stage performers.
I was a bathroom singer till 3rd or 4th grade, after which I realised that I could really sing well. I started listening to songs of all genres and tried to imitate them. Gradually, I improved my singing and decided to learn it professionally. I joined music classes in 6th grade for the first time. I took them seriously for a year. When I would make mistakes, my guru would scold me. I, as a child didn’t like it and due to this small reason, I left that class. It was a mistake. I learnt my first lesson- One must learn to take criticism but at that time I didn’t understand. Later, I resumed my practice sessions with famous Marathi singer Saleel Kulkarni for one year. My father got transferred abroad, I had to leave that class. I had no guru abroad so I decided to practice every day on my own. Practice is the only key to success that was my second learning.
After coming back to India, there came a turning point in my life. I entered my first reality show SaReGaMaPa Li’l Champs in 8th grade. I was mentored by the legendaries, Shaan and Monali Thakur , which was a dream come true . My happiness knew no bounds when I ended up among Top 10 contestants on the show. However, the happiness didn’t last long, as it was the first season of the show, the television team had not recorded any of the episodes and wasn’t going to telecast it on the TV. Although my voice couldn’t reach people, I got to know about my flaws and mistakes through my mentors. I decided to fix my flaws. In today’s world of tough competition there is no short cut to success.
After practising for hours every day, I decided to participate in the INDIAN IDOL auditions at Mumbai. I succeeded till 5 rounds in the auditions, but got eliminated in the final round. I was heartbroken, but at the same time the rejection made me stronger. The Indian Idol platform gave me an opportunity to sing at Radio Mirchi 95.0 in 10th grade. I loved the experience of singing for Radio Mirchi. Listening to my own song on radio was nothing less than magic.
Indian Idol taught me that in order to be a good singer I needed a base of classical music training. And thus, I learnt Hindustani classical music for almost 3 years, which trained me in an excellent way and made me a professional singer or may be a semi-professional, I’ll say.
I felt I could compete with the world now. So, I started recording Bollywood songs at home. When I shared those, I got a good response. I also got the opportunity to sing in restaurants.
In my musical journey, my school has a very big role to play. Akshara believes in holistic learning. I am in every sense a true Aksharite- a passionate singer, who also plays Tabla, Harmonium, Piano and Ukulele and studies Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with zest. I get support and encouragement from teachers and students which motivates me to work harder.
I created a YouTube channel in the month of January 2019. I started uploading all my recorded songs on it and was extremely happy to gain subscribers. I gained 100 subscribers in less than 2 months.
Lastly, I feel that my journey of music has been full of ups and downs, but it has made me what I am today. I still struggle in the field of music, but I like that struggle because it is my passion. I want to sing- as singing gives me not only happiness but also my identity. I aspire to become the next Arijit Singh.
